Director John Lasseter worked with a team of screenwriters, which included Buffy guru Joss Whedon, future Pixar Oscar winners Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, WALL•E) and Pete Docter (Monsters, Inc., Up), Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow (who would go on to collaborate on decidedly lesser future projects like the Garfield movies and Daddy Day Camp), and Disney veteran Joe Ranft (who had contributed story material to both Beauty & the Beast and The Lion King) to craft a story that is both familiar and unique.
I mean, here we have a sequel to a mediocre Eddie Murphy comedy that didn’t even measure up to the standards of the star of The Adventures of Pluto Nash (2002) and Norbit (2007).
Filling in for Eddie Murphy in a septically humored kiddie sequel to Daddy Day Care, Gooding gives a mug-job performance that consists mainly of reacting (again and again) to nasty smells.

Good news: "Daddy Day Camp," the unexpected sequel to 2003's barely watchable comedy "Daddy Day Care," is superior to its inspiration in one very significant way.
The follow-up to the 2003 Eddie Murphy vehicle "Daddy Day Care" – in which, notably, not a single original cast member returns – "Daddy Day Camp" finds Cuba Gooding Jr. taking over the role of Charlie Hinton, a modern Mr. Mom who, upon finding himself suddenly unemployed, created his own ultimately successful home-based day care.
Taking them to see "Daddy Day Camp," for example, a follow-up to 2003�eTMs sweet and funny "Daddy Day Care," which starred Eddie Murphy and Jeff Garlin as a couple of downsized corporate types who start a successful home-based daycare center much to the chagrin of their snooty rival (played by Anjelica Huston), who heads up the prestigious Chapman Academy.
That it took three guys to merely come up with the plot baffles science, though it’s perhaps explained by the fact that this unholy trio consisted of Rodkey, Joel Cohen (Cheaper by the Dozen and both Garfield movies) and Cohen’s partner in perfidy Alex Sokolow.
