What critics compared After the Wedding to
Five years earlier we will see just what has befallen civilization and why Malorie is taking such care of her "Bird Box." Danish director Susanne Bier ("After the Wedding") sets the stage for quite the conceptual thriller, dramatizing an apocalyptic event with such mounting horror Stephen King might grow green with envy.
But like much of the characterization found in this movie from the Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier (“After the Wedding”), the horse-related theme is severely undercooked.
The Danish director, one of the few contemporary helmers who’s been able to play real-world melodrama as life-and-death horror (as she did so brilliantly in “Brothers” and “After the Wedding”), has yet to achieve the same trick in English.
What it’s about: Directed by Susanne Bier ( After the Wedding , In a Better World), Bird Box takes its name from a box of birds that Mallory carries with her on her journey, which she and the children — who are named Boy and Girl, for reasons that become clear later on — must undertake blindfolded to save their very lives.
Directed by Susanne Bier ( After the Wedding , AMC’s The Night Manager ) and adapted from Josh Malerman’s 2014 novel of the same name, Bird Box unfolds across two timelines: The first, in which Malorie (Sandra Bullock) attempts to shepherd Girl (Vivien Lyra Blair) and Boy (Julian Edwards) through a post-apocalyptic landscape — while all three are blindfolded; and the second, several years earlier, explaining the circumstances that led them to their journey in the first place.

Were it but the two of them, perhaps the tension would be less, but they have an 8-year-old son, Henry (Azhy Robertson, After the Wedding ), and given that Charlie wants to stay in New York while Nicole relocates to Los Angeles, the custody battle becomes ever more complicated.

Aside from some over-the-top and unrealistic gore, Chernobyl Diaries benefits from being beautifully shot by Danish cinematographer Morten Soborg ( Oscar winner In a Better World and After the Wedding) who makes the most of the ghostly surroundings, with Belgrade and Budapest locations standing in for Ukraine.
