Pushed to the breaking-up point after their latest 'why can't you do this one little thing for me?' argument, Brooke calls it quits with her boyfriend Gary. What follows is a hilarious series of remedies, war tactics, overtures and undermining tricks – all encouraged by the former couple's friends and confidantes …and the occasional total stranger! When neither ex is willing to move out of their shared apartment, the only solution is to continue living as hostile roommates until one of them reaches breaking point.

What critics compared The Break-Up to
Here, writers Jon Lucas and Scott Moore – they of the execrable Four Christmases , and apparently aided by an extensive rewrite from Phillips and Jeremy Garelick (The Break-Up) – depart from a dude-humor blueprint.
Peyton Reed took over as director, and Ant-Man is a positive joy compared to his two most recent movies, The Break-Up and Yes Man.
With Rudd cast in the lead and a screenplay co-written by Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), who was supposed to direct but dropped out due to creative differences, leaving Peyton Reed (Yes Man, The Break-up) to take over, there is little surprise that Ant-Man adopts a more comical attitude toward its material than even Jon Favreau’s original Iron Man (2008) (other contributors to the script include Attack the Block’s Joe Cornish, regular Will Ferrell collaborator Adam McKay, and Rudd).
But entrusting this to director Peyton Reed, known only for comedies (“The Break-Up”) occasionally pays dividends.
Directing duties fell to Peyton Reed, whose feature films include "Yes Man" and "The Break-Up."
Directed by the comedy specialist Peyton Reed (“Bring It On,” “The Break-Up,” “Yes Man”) from a script credited to Edgar Wright, Adam McKay, Joe Cornish and Paul Rudd (who stars), this film is a passable piece of drone work from the ever-expanding Marvel-Disney colony.
Then Adam McKay and star Paul Rudd stepped in to rewrite the script (which was further doctored by other, uncredited hands), and rom-com specialist Peyton Reed ( Yes Man , The Break-Up ) was brought aboard to direct.
Try as it might to be uplifting, Yes Man shares a misanthropic vein with Reed’s relationship dramedy The Break-Up, which paired Jennifer Anniston and Vince Vaughn as a warring couple.
Reed's "Down With Love," a careful homage to Rock-and-Doris comedies, showed a careful eye, if not an abundance of wit; his follow-up, "The Break-Up," was, amazingly, both funny and adult.
Director Peyton Reed ("Down with Love," "The Break-Up") manages a huge cast and a plethora of locations and events with seeming ease, connecting the dots that tie a Korean lesson with wedding planning and, later, match making.
But instead, director Peyton Reed ("The Break-Up") and three credited screenwriters have turned that into a dopey comedy that's only sporadically amusing.
Director Peyton Reed (2006's " The Break-Up ") has shown a flair for both humor and human observation in the past; he captures some of that here, but this time the overly calculated narrative suffocates many of its would-be charms.
He is ably aided by director Peyton Reed, who has demonstrated a deft hand with music-drenched comedy in the films Bring It On, Down With Love and The Break-Up.
Perhaps worst of all are the "meet-hate" movies in which two people spend the entire movie fighting before falling in love ( The Break-Up , etc.).

Besides being funnier than most comedies, romantic or otherwise, the film succeeds at a level where the Vince Vaughn/Jennifer Aniston �anti-romantic comedy�, The Break-Up, failed so completely.
