Like Guy Pearce in "Memento," the title character in writer-director Scott Frank's "The Lookout" needs to write notes to himself so he won't forget what he has to do each day.
Just don't expect another "Memento," despite the superficial similarities.
The story may sound reminiscent of Christopher Nolan's "Memento."
Thrillers featuring characters with short term memory problems risk being mentioned alongside Memento, and that comparison does not favor The Lookout.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, as a fellow who has suffered serious head trauma, comes up with such a moody Method assemblage of twitches, tics, and guilty Memento mannerisms that he's not much fun to watch.
In many ways, “The Lookout” most resembles the neo-noirs of John Dahl from the ’90s, like “Red Rock West” and “The Last Seduction”.
Sergio Di Zio ("The Boondock Saints," "Cinderella Man"), a young David Paymer lookalike, is also incredibly sympathetic as 'Deputy Donut,' the naive small town cop who checks up on Chris (although Frank's final placement of the character is akin to shooting puppies in a barrel) and Greg Dunham, a shadowy Sam Shepard double, is evil personified as the black clad henchman Bone.
