He cleans up at the table, then bumps into 9-year-old Conor (Jimmy Bennett), channeling the role of Joey in "Airplane!", and his saucy single mom Maggie James (Jacinda Barrett).
Most of the dialogue occurs in the first half, and only a very trusting writer would come up with a line like ''Conor, your friend the Captain wants you to blow the New Year's horn" and not expect the audience to think of Peter Graves in ''Airplane!"
Cinematographer John Seale (2006's " Poseidon ") has outdone himself, crafting an aesthetic masterclass out of what could have just been another dreary, dime-a-dozen dystopian world.
Venice is exotically captured by cinematographer John Seale (2006's " Poseidon "), but all it really does is serve to make one wish he or she was watching 1973's Nicolas Roeg masterpiece " Don't Look Now ," instead.

Russell, who wrote the book on Poseidon’s brand of iconic hero in disaster movies like "Escape From New York" and "Backdraft," consummates one of the film’s most unsettling underwater scenes with an Oscar-quality virtuosic realization that galvanizes the movie as an instant classic.
Russell is the one time Mayor of New York (?) and, in what I can only assume is a nod to the much superior "Backdraft," a former fireman.

The cinematography by John Seale (2006's " Poseidon ") sneaks in a few attractive shots, but is largely mucked up by the lacking effects work and post-production processing.
