The Roost director Ti West may have modeled his work on grainy, gore-a-minute blood baths, but this is anything but.
West, a rising young director of minor cult pleasures (2005’s “The Roost,’’ 2007’s “Trigger Man’’), comes clean here about his love for all things Bava (Mario) and Carpenter (John).

The best part is getting there, and West (the cult-horror director behind "The Roost" and the upcoming "Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever") takes a great deal of pleasure and care laying out specific '80s-era details without making them campy or overdone.
Writer/director Ti West (The Roost) wisely refuses to play his honorific references for laughs or self-awareness and the result is desultory and wickedly affecting.
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and with "The House of the Devil," a baby-sitter-meets-evil gem of a movie, up-and-coming writer-director Ti West ("The Roost") shrewdly uses our entire sense memory of horror movie experiences to bring his seen-it-all audience to a jittery state of unnerving, shoe-dropping anticipation.
From his early years with his feature film debut, The Roost , to The House of the Devil and The Innkeepers , Ti has managed to create quite an exciting resume.
