Dahlia and her five-year-old daughter are ready to begin a new life together. But their new apartment — dilapidated and worn — suddenly seems to take on a life of its own. Mysterious noises, persistent leaks of dark water and other strange happenings send Dahlia on a haunting and mystifying pursuit — one that unleashes a torrent of living nightmares.

What critics compared Dark Water to
There’s a hint, too, of the protective melancholia of Hideo Nakata’s spine-tingling Dark Water, from which Kent’s multilayered fable borrows both its heartrending theme and ultimate resolution; a strange and terrifying world, seen through the eyes of a mother whom Kent, in an interview, tellingly described as “drowning”.
More reminiscent of "The Others" (Nicole Kidman) than, even, Nakata's The Ring, he departs from the usual setting for such intrigues of the mind by a haunted apartment complex on Roosevelt Island in the East River off Manahattan.
Touchstone would be wise to position “Dark Water” as a movie more akin to “The Others” than “The Ring,” if it hopes to find the audience the movie deserves.
Despite an unsatisfactory ending, Dark Water emerges as a must-see for viewers who enjoyed such memorable ghost stories as The Sixth Sense , The Shining and The Others .
Gallons of blood come into play (much blood and other fluids are vomited by various possessed characters throughout, and at one point the tower block’s lift fills with blood (which cascaded from the lift in The Shining , Stanley Kubrick, 1980, while torrential rain filled the lift in Dark Water , Hideo Nakata, 2002, threatening to drown those inside) allowing for various women to become drenched in the stuff and look like they’ve wandered in from the finale of Carrie (Brian De Palma, 1976).
