Having directed "Pretty Woman," "Runaway Bride" and "The Princess Diaries," Garry Marshall is an old hand at spinning contemporary fantasies for women, and although they don't hold up to close scrutiny, these middle-brow comedy-dramas have broad appeal for those who like their laughter accompanied by the occasional tear.
At this point it should be acknowledged that Garry Marshall basically makes fairy tales--some more obvious than others ("Pretty Woman," "The Princess Diaries")--but all built from the same component parts.

Renee's life lessons play out in the exact manner they would had she actually turned into a super model, and her revelations are handled in ways I thought Hollywood had left behind with the likes of Raising Helen or whatever other 90s rom-com that sucks.
