The film also hews to a premise — tiny people living a clandestine existence under the noses of full-sized humans — that has been similarly employed by “The Secret World of Arrietty,” “Arthur and the Invisibles ” and “ The Borrowers ” over the past several years.
"Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets," alas, harks back to another passion of his - elaborate adaptations of French children's stories, such as "Arthur and the Invisibles" (a colossal flop in the U.S., although it did well enough in Europe to pump out a couple of sequels).
But for Besson devotees who sat stoically through "The Lady" (or patiently during that endless "Arthur and the Invisibles" series) "Lucy" is a trippy return to form — to mind-twisting stories, to rocket-propelled camerawork, to eyes-wide-open dreams.
More recently, he’s alternated between producing and writing dumb and dumber Eurotrash (the hit Taken franchise, non-hits like From Paris with Love and Three Days to Kill) and directing disposable duds (The Family, The Lady, Arthur and the Invisibles).
