What critics compared Ghosts of the Abyss to
Of course, all these concerns come second (or third, or fourth) to the technology at work behind the scenes—the Cameron/Pace Fusion 3D Camera System which was developed and refined for "Avatar" and Cameron's underwater docs "Aliens of the Deep" and "Ghosts of the Abyss."
The abundance of watery mayhem recalls "The Abyss"; the deep dives and 3D visuals bring to mind his documentaries "Ghosts of the Abyss" and "Aliens of the Deep" (both also produced by Wight); and like "Titanic," "Sanctum" kicks off with a nifty computer graphic that provides a visual and scientific context for the thrills and spills to come.
Along with his fans, Cameron (one of six producers attached to the film) apparently recognized the similarities between Sanctum's script (penned by Andrew Wight, Cameron's producer on Ghosts of the Abyss and Aliens of the Deep) and his own deep-diving melodrama, The Abyss.
No accident that Wight, prior to making his unpremeditated jump into feature screenwriting, served as producer of the Cameron-directed 3-D underwater documentaries Ghosts of the Abyss (about the Titanic ) and Aliens of the Deep (about the Abyss ).
He gets huge assists from producer James Cameron, through both the 3D process Cameron developed for Avatar and the aquatic shooting techniques he honed on his lovely underwater documentaries Aliens of the Deep and Ghosts of the Abyss , and there’s a sense that the team of divers exploring this cave, whom we meet as the film opens, are akin in their seriousness and dedication to their work to Cameron’s colonial marines of Aliens or his deep-sea roughnecks of The Abyss.
Indeed, among the many previous Cameron titles this new picture recalls (including, notably, Titanic ), foremost are his documentaries about undersea exploration, Ghosts of the Abyss (2003) and Aliens of the Deep (2005).
Excluding his documentaries (2003’s Ghosts of the Abyss and 2005’s Aliens of the Deep), Avatar was the last time Cameron made a feature film.

Leave it to James Cameron to re-invent the format to such an extent that there's no way Ghosts of the Abyss will ever be compared to one of those cheesy '50s 3-D flicks.
It seems that way because the man hasn’t made a fictional feature film since his 1997 Academy Award-winning mega-hit Titanic (and, no, the IMAX documentary Ghosts of the Abyss doesn’t count).
Among his activities in the dozen years since Titanic, the director made two underwater documentaries (Ghosts of the Abyss and Aliens of the Deep) that marked him as both an explorer and a conservationist.
Yet after releasing what was (then) the highest grossing film in the world, Cameron seemed content to retire to the sea and potter about with nautical filming techniques on documentaries such as Expedition: Bismarck , Ghosts of the Abyss and Aliens of the Deep .
