What critics compared Uptown Girls to
Writer/director Boaz Yakin, who debuted with the gritty coming-of-age crime drama Fresh, and somewhere along the line detoured into fluff like Uptown Girls, relies too much on the swooshy hand-held ‘chaos cinema’ camerawork of recent vintage to generate mayhem, but the film also has a distinctly old-school Steven Seagal-circa-Out for Justice vibe that makes all that easier to tolerate.
Writer-director Boaz Yakin (“Remember the Titans,” “Uptown Girls”) keeps us of balance, spending much of the film’s first half hour following Mei, winning sympathy for her plight.
(Yakin wrote Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and directed Uptown Girls , neither of which boded well.
Yakin isn’t exactly a seasoned action filmmaker, having guided exceptionally peaceful stories (“Remember the Titans” and “Uptown Girls”) during his uneven career.
Trying to shoehorn those personal experiences into the movie's formulaic storyline sometimes seems too much for screenwriters Boaz Yakin (whose directorial credits range from "Remember the Titans" to "Uptown Girls") and newcomer Victoria Arch.
