Thir13en Ghosts (2001)

Directed by Steve Beck

Arthur and his two children inherit his uncle's estate: a glass house that serves as a prison to twelve ghosts. When the family, accompanied by a nanny and an attorney, enter the house they find themselves trapped inside an evil machine 'designed by the Devil and powered by the dead' to open the Eye of Hell. Aided by a ghost hunter and his rival, a ghost rights activist out to set the ghosts free, the group must do what they can to get out of the house alive.

The Call poster
Screenwriter Richard D’Ovidio hasn’t written a screenplay since 2001’s “Thir13en Ghosts.”

That the gripping intelligence of the first 75 minutes grows dumber the closer the film gets to its improbable conclusion is less Anderson's fault than screenwriter Richard D'Ovidio's (2001's " Thir13en Ghosts "), but it still knocks "The Call" down a notch from the "rave" status it otherwise might have earned.

Shocking, I know, to think the writer of Thir13en Ghosts and the Steven Seagal "classic" Exit Wounds may not have been up to the task of crafting a fully realized narrative.
That’s not much of a surprise considering the script was written by the same guy behind such cinematic turds as “Thir13en Ghosts” and “Exit Wounds,” but no one could have guessed that the villain would be such a ridiculously over-the-top Norman Bates clone whose most developed character trait is his love of early ’80s pop music.
