What critics compared 102 Dalmatians to

Cruella poster
The other, of course, is Cruella de Vil, played by Emma Stone with enough seething, over the top vengefulness to almost make one forget Glenn Close’s memorable Cruella in “101 Dalmatians” (1996) and “102 Dalmatians” (2000), both live-action sequels to Disney’s beloved 1961 animated classic, which is paid brief homage at the end of the new film.

In all fairness it should be flagged that the tone of Streep’s performance owes a lot to Glenn Close’s portrayal of Cruella in the 1996 remake of 101 Dalmatians and its 2000 sequel 102 Dalmatians .

That in turn spawned “102 Dalmatians,” in 2000.

The wide theatrical and streaming release is a spinoff/prequel to both 1961’s animated “One Hundred and One Dalmatians” and 1996’s live-action “101 Dalmatians” (which had its sequel, “102 Dalmatians,” over twenty years ago).

Close also showed up in the inferior 2000 sequel, 102 Dalmatians .

The film from director Kevin Lima, who has worked in both formats (the animated "Tarzan" and live-action "102 Dalmatians"), has moments of hilarious inspiration.

With tongues firmly set in cheek, screenwriter Bill Kelly ("Blast from the Past") and director Kevin Lima ("Tarzan," "102 Dalmatians") set out to turn the Disney image inside out with a partly animated, partly live-action fairy tale that upsets all the conventions of traditional Disney fairy tales.

As a director, he worked on previous Disney efforts like A Goofy Movie, Tarzan, and 102 Dalmatians, and he really outdoes himself here.

Anyway, the precision with which Enchanted's team, led by director Kevin Lima (of a spotty career including Tarzan and the live-action 102 Dalmatians ) is not for its own sake; it is a rather savage parody of the form, and it sets us up nicely for the actual plot of the film, in which we see what happens when a Disney heroine, with all the random singing and devotion to the idea of True Love at First Sight, ends up lost on the mean streets, although not too terribly mean, for this is still a family movie.
Kevin Lima ("Tarzan"/"A Goofy Movie"/"102 Dalmatians") joyfully directs this Disney classic fairytale story and gives it a modern twist--the damsel rescues the prince.
Not much of a dilemma, but for the girlish brand of wish-fulfillment favored by director Kevin Lima ("102 Dalmatians"), it'll do.

Only one of three scribes to blame for this mess, Steers seems to have contributed a certain smug misanthropy to the picture of the variety that fuelled the over-praised Salinger ape Igby , with Brian Regan and Kristen Buckley, the brain trust behind 102 Dalmatians, apparently responsible for the sentimental slapstick garbage that comprises the rest of the piece.

In "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days," director Donald Petrie ("Miss Congeniality," "Grumpy Old Men") and screenwriters Kristen Buckley & Brian Regan ("102 Dalmatians") and Burr Steers ("Igby Goes Down") -- who work from a book by Michele Alexander and Jeannie Long - have taken that last element a step farther.
