I was thrilled by the final shot, which is an x-ray of a nighttime shot that closes Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s lavishly daffy “Charisma” (1999).
Ostensibly a sleek investigative thriller, Creepy later takes a detour into macabre and surreal territory, returning to the outré register of Kurosawa films such as Pulse and Charisma, following his recent, gently emotive take on the supernatural, Journey to the Shore.
His scenarios can occasionally err on the side of incomprehensibility (1999's Charisma depicts the tender love affair between a man and a... well, a giant poisonous tree), but when he hits, it lingers.
In his previous film Charisma, which Kurosawa described as an Indiana Jones story if Indy were a regular guy, the action revolved around a mysterious evil tree and was mostly about Darwinian uncertainty within one's environment.
