Then there's Emily Watson ("Trixie," "Hilary and Jackie") in another solid performance as the head housemaid with a secret, Michael Gambon ("Charlotte Gray," "The Insider") as the surly lord of the manor, and Helen Mirren ("Teaching Mrs. Tingle," 'The Madness of King George") as the head housekeeper.
Directed by the usually sophisticated Anand Tucker ("Hilary and Jackie," "Shopgirl"), "Leap Year" forgets the most important thing about romantic comedies: We know how they're going to end, so the journey needs to be the fun part.
How a stew featuring the appealing Adams, the magnetic Goode, and lyrical director Anand Tucker (who also helmed Hilary and Jackie and Shopgirl ) fails to generate any sparks is beyond comprehension.

They feel as phony as the characters in Shopgirl and Hilary and Jackie felt real.
