Donnie's lackluster new girlfriend, Gretchen (Jena Malone, Stepmom), is living under some sort of witness protection program ("Gretchen" is not her real name), hiding from her psychotic dad, who stabbed her mom four times in the chest.
The first two attempts to bring Rowling's work to the big screen--Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets--were both directed by Chris Columbus, the corporate sentimentalist who gave us such explorations of contemporary domesticity as Stepmom, Mrs. Doubtfire, Adventures in Babysitting, and the Home Alone movies.
The problem was that Columbus had previously only directed family comedies like Home Alone 1 & 2, Adventures in Babysitting, Mrs. Doubtfire, Stepmom, and Only The Lonely.
Obliterates pleasant memories of director Jessie Nelson's only previous feature (1994's Corrina, Corrina) while reminding us that she also wrote Stepmom and The Story of Us.
Written and directed by Jessie Nelson (the brains behind such seminal works as Stepmom and The Story of Us), I Am Sam is the green eggs and ham rendition of the custody battle melodrama.
Writer/director Jessie Nelson wrote the equally maudlin "Stepmom," and her work on "I Am Sam" is no improvement.
Writer/director Jessie Nelson, whose previous writing credits include The Story of Us and Stepmom , opts to flex some creative muscle with her first directing credit by shooting almost the entire film using hand-held cameras.
