What critics compared Tomorrow Never Dies to
Nomi most strongly recalled Michelle Yeoh’s Wai Lin in Tomorrow Never Dies, arguably one of the physically strongest Bond leading ladies to match the hero, but even she fell into his arms by the end.
It's true that he's your typical antagonist that wants to do something bad (in this case, kill millions of people with a bioweapon), but even a somewhat shallow character like that has allowed a lot of actors to have fun with it in the past, including Gert Frobe ("Goldfinger"), Jonathan Pryce ("Tomorrow Never Dies"), Sean Bean ("Goldeneye"), and others.
The MacGuffin driving the plot is all very contemporary, even if it’s truth-manipulation themes are rather reminiscent of the 1997 Bond entry Tomorrow Never Dies .
The car chase on the Spanish Steps wouldn’t have been half as memorable without Hunt and Grace awkwardly navigating being handcuffed together (perhaps in a nod to Tomorrow Never Dies ?) and the breathtaking motorbike / parachute stunt is grounded in reality by Ethan snapping at Benji “I’m trying to get away from the mountain!”
The story, written by the franchise’s writers Chris Morgan and Drew Pearce, borrows from various spy films, such as Tomorrow Never Dies, 1997, Mission: Impossible 2, 2000, and Spectre, 2015.

Director Doug Liman and screenwriters Christopher McQuarrie, Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth could have borrowed a name from any number of James Bond films — You Only Live Twice, Live and Let Die, Tomorrow Never Dies, Die Another Day — to describe its hero’s curse and gift.
Other fun extended cameo parts go to Cheech Marin ("Tin Cup," "From Dusk Till Dawn"), Danny Trejo ("Reindeer Games," "From Dusk Till Dawn"), Terry Hatcher ("Tomorrow Never Dies," "Heaven's Prisoners") and one of the hottest actors working today in a concluding, surprise bit (although it's probably not who you think it would most likely be considering the subject matter).

It climaxes with a giant battle--well, giant-er battle, no less easy to follow for its scale--complete with noble sacrifices that don't land with much impact and a cutesy-pie denouement I didn't care for when I saw it at the end of The Spy Who Loved Me, Octopussy, and Tomorrow Never Dies, either.
