Seven Years in Tibet (1997)

Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer journeys to the Himalayas without his family to head an expedition in 1939. But when World War II breaks out, the arrogant Harrer falls into Allied forces' hands as a prisoner of war. He escapes with a fellow detainee and makes his way to Lhasa, Tibet, where he meets the 14-year-old Dalai Lama, whose friendship ultimately transforms his outlook on life.

What critics compared Seven Years in Tibet to
Jon Voight (1999's "Varsity Blues") is emphatic as wheelchair-bound President Franklin Roosevelt, while Alec Baldwin (2000's "State and Main"), Dan Aykroyd (2000's "Loser"), and Mako (1997's "Seven Years in Tibet") make equally memorable impressions.
Another veteran actor, Mako ("Seven Years in Tibet") does a nice job as Admiral Yamamoto of the Japanese Imperial Navy, mastermind of the attack.
I would give a synopsis of the plot, but I don’t need to if you’ve seen Dances with Wolves , Glory , Seven Years in Tibet , Blood Diamond , The Last Samurai , The Children of Huang Shi , or any other film where a white European character stumbles into a culture of noble but blinkered primitives and then proceeds to save them not only from his (and it is always his ) fellow Europeans, but also from themselves.
Those dubious about Pitt's ability to pull this off in the wake of his recent attempts in Seven Years in Tibet (which is briefly referenced as an in-joke during Fight Club) and Meet Joe Black will suffer a change of heart after seeing this film.

Finally, there’s a shot near the end (I think it’s before the reveal but I could be wrong) where in the background to one scene there’s a cinema playing Seven Years in Tibet , starring Brad Pitt.
Much of the film's humor comes at the hands of Pitt, who gets a good-sport award for enduring a backhanded joke about "Seven Years in Tibet."
(Interesting note: in a street scene, there is a movie marqee board advertising "Seven Years in Tibet" - another Pitt flick.)
