What critics compared In & Out to
Gliding along the sidewalks of Manhattan in her poufy marshmallow of a wedding gown (it's the best wedding-dress wrangling since Joan Cusack in "In & Out"), Giselle is a pretty fish far from water.
She's as funny as she was in "In & Out" and her reaction to Black's arm-flapping rendition of "Edge of Seventeen" ("Just like a white-winged dove ...") is priceless.
The movie, a madcap British farce from director Frank Oz ("Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," "In & Out," the voice of Miss Piggy), offers a few solid laughs and is generally fun, but it's nothing great.
(God bless Ingmar!) Instead, this broad farce blows the coffin lid off dignified send-offs, thanks to Dean Craig’s screwball script and the deft direction by Frank Oz, who previously helmed Bowfinger, In & Out and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
Director Frank Oz ("Bowfinger," "In & Out") devises shots that show off Tudyk's assets nicely - comic and otherwise.
But when turned loose on accessible, not-altogether-insincere dark-comedy scenarios — “What About Bob?,” “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” “In & Out” — Oz understands humor at a molecular level of structure, volume and timing.
Muppeteer turned filmmaker Frank Oz ("Bowfinger"/"In & Out"/"Stepford Wives") brings his uneven record with him as he adroitly tries to spin comedy out of the farcical situation of uproarious chaos at a dignified funeral and desperately tries to make the best of a one-note comedy scenario; it's based on the nutty script by Dean Craig.
Director Frank Oz ( Little Shop of Horrors , Death at a Funeral ) keeps things bright and cheerful and prevents any meanness from creeping in.
