What critics compared Sleepers to
The presence of Bacon evokes the similarly themed but inferior 1996 film "Sleepers," in which he played tormentor to a group of boys who grew up to avenge themselves.
On one level, Mystic River is almost Sleepers for those who hated Sleepers: Here's another drama starring Kevin Bacon in which boys linked together by abuse grow into men haunted by demons of vengeance.
While I was watching Clint Eastwood's cinematic treatment of the David Lehan novel Mystic River, my mind was drawn to another recent film adaptation of repressed childhood memories, Barry Levinson's Sleepers.
It starts like a Stephen King novel (or like the movie "Sleepers"): a working-class New England neighbourhood, three best-friends-forever enjoying happy childhood, then something terrible happens and Nothing Is Ever the Same Again.
