Chain Reaction (1996)

At the University of Chicago, a research team that includes brilliant student machinist Eddie Kasalivich experiences a breakthrough: a stable form of fusion that may lead to a waste-free energy source. However, a private company wants to exploit the technology, so Kasalivich and physicist Dr. Lily Sinclair are framed for murder, and the fusion device is stolen. On the run from the FBI, they must recover the technology and exonerate themselves.

What critics compared Chain Reaction to
It's more than a little eccentric to begin with to make audio-showpiece discs of three films that carry a mono surround signal; odder still is the noninclusion of Speed between the two lesser attempts at turning Reeves into an action hero that preceded and followed it, Point Break and Chain Reaction, respectively.
Unfortunately, the decision was made, somewhere along the line, to draft sophomore scripter Josh Friedman (“Chain Reaction”) to adapt the terrific Wells story.
The efficient script by David Koepp ("Spider-man", "Panic Room") and Josh Friedman ("Chain Reaction") delivers the requisite thrills but holds up to precious little scrutiny.
