What critics compared Waiting to Exhale to
Midsommar earns the distinction of being perhaps the first movie ever to warrant the description “ The Wicker Man meets Waiting to Exhale .”
My Best Friend's Wedding was written by Ronald Bass (Rain Man, Dangerous Minds, Waiting to Exhale) and directed by P.J. Hogan, who knows how to make a wedding comedy, having helmed the Australian import Muriel's Wedding.
Bass, who wrote this as an original, has credits including some of the best recent women's roles: "Sleeping With the Enemy," " The Joy Luck Club ," "When a Man Loves a Woman," " Dangerous Minds ," "Waiting to Exhale."
But the movie itself is a disappointment, as director P.J. Hogan ("Muriel's Wedding") and screenwriter Ronald Bass ("Rain Man," "Waiting to Exhale") attempt a screwball domestic comedy in the vein of "Holiday" or "The Philadelphia Story."
Meanwhile, director Angela Bassett has her own legacy: an Oscar nomination – earned from her relevant experience as the star of the Tina Turner biopic What's Love Got To Do With It?, which made her a star – and appearances in popular movies like Waiting To Exhale and How Stella Got Her Groove Back, among many others, and now a run on television's American Horror Story.
Bassett knows this terrain very well from having acted in the Tina Turner biopic What's Love Got to Do With It? — and probably from having been a celebrity for more than 20 years and getting to know other stars, including Houston, with whom she appeared with in Waiting to Exhale.
