Although the anthology film has been a mainstay in the horror genre for decades, it’s been a few years since one truly captured the vibe of those classics like Creepshow, Tales From the Crypt or, one of my personal favorites, Tales From the Hood .
Luckily for us, Ryan Spindell has gifted us with an anthology that invokes titans of the subgenre, like Trick r’ Treat and Tales from the Hood .
With Us and his stunning 2017 debut, Get Out , Peele encourages his audiences to identify with characters often left out of genre fare, in the tradition of ’90s horror films like The People Under the Stairs , Tales from the Hood , and Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight (all of which are highlighted in the recent Shudder documentary Horror Noire ).
(Rusty Cundieff’s unexpectedly provocative Tales from the Hood achieves a similar trenchancy, but that 1995 anthology remains something of an underseen curio, especially among white horror aficionados.)
A night-time sequence, in which Walter runs out of the darkness towards Chris, has the same sense of American gothic dread as David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows , while the humour vacillates between the broader strokes of Rusty Cundieff’s underrated Tales from the Hood and the insidious cruelty of Lars von Trier’s Manderlay .
And where films like “Tales from the Hood” were didactic, “Get Out” is angry and baffled and terrified.
One moment brings Tales From The Hood to mind, so I was howling while leaning back in horror.
