What critics compared Mallrats to
Directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (who made the snappy gambling flick “Mississippi Grind,” also with Mendelsohn) use the time period as a way to celebrate a smorgasbord of ’90s nostalgia; there are references to Nine Inch Nails, the Smashing Pumpkins, “True Lies” and “Mallrats,” with soundtrack cues from No Doubt, Hole, Nirvana, Elastica and Garbage.
Set in the mid-1990s, and serving as a key plot point between the twin Avengers films, Infinity War and this summer’s Endgame , Captain Marvel lovingly embraces tropes from the “buddy cop” genre, nodding to the wondrous years of Blockbuster Video, Mallrats , and grunge music.

After the meandering and inexplicably popular "Clerks", its better-left-unmentioned sequel "Mallrats" and the cute but obvious "Chasing Amy", Mr. Smith has finally created a movie that is unique and at times both insightful and funny.
Indicentally, these two characters have appeared in all of Smith's movies, including Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy.
Dogma is the fourth film from writer-director Kevin Smith, who has directed his share of smartass little movies: "Clerks" is a cheap but clever situation comedy, "Mallrats" is mostly a misfire but it has its moments, and "Chasing Amy" is a clumsily directed but funny and insightful anti-romantic comedy.

Mallrats was a watershed experience for me in college, and while it has not aged especially well, it reconfirmed the strengths he displayed in Clerks as a storyteller, specifically his ability to mine both humor and human insight out of virtually any average situation.
With films like Clerks , Mallrats , and Chasing Amy , Smith opened a door that, about 10 years later, Apatow walked through.
A cult figure among the Adult Swim crowd, Smith has always been better at the foulmouthed and frankly sophomoric (Clerks, Mallrats) than the wistful and sincere (Chasing Amy, Jersey Girl).
It is not as good overall as Clerks II, let alone Smith’s earlier films Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Dogma, but it will do.
This is not another "Mallrats" or "Jersey Girl", mind, but it sometimes almost feels like it is...
The established auteur who made Clerks (un and deux), Mallrats, and Chasing Amy may now be a 38-year-old husband and father who heads a successful production company, but he's still got cheap advice for schlumpy twentysomething guys like Zack.
