Four Rooms (1995)

Directed by Robert Rodriguez

It's Ted the Bellhop's first night on the job...and the hotel's very unusual guests are about to place him in some outrageous predicaments. It seems that this evening's room service is serving up one unbelievable happening after another.

What critics compared Four Rooms to

Bad Times at the El Royale poster
A cross between a Quentin Tarantino movie (particularly Four Rooms and Pulp Fiction ) and Vacancy , writer/director Drew Goddard enjoys making films that deliver the unexpected in unconventional ways.

The film is also a tribute to the classic image of the Bell Hop (maybe the best since Four Rooms ) and has a lot of fun – and a good deal of respect – for the notion of who the clichéd ‘Grand Hotel’ functions.

The brains behind such classics as "James and the Giant Peach", “The Witches”, "The Man from the South" (which was spoofed by Tarantino in his segment of "Four Rooms") and the unforgettable first episode of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" ("Lamb to the Slaughter"), Dahl made a name for himself with his playful intelligence, and decidedly twisted sense of humor.

Rodriguez also directed "The Misbehavers", the best episode in "Four Rooms".
Since then hes produced the dismal Four Rooms and The Faculty and now this ill-conceived kiddie spy romp.

Antonio Banderas (also in Rodriguez's Desperado and his Four Rooms segment) and Carla Gugino play enemy spies who fall in love, get married and have kids (Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara).

With Spy Kids, loosely inspired by his raucous segment in the 1995 omnibus Four Rooms , Rodriguez cannily merges these two seemingly conflicting sensibilities, and the result is an all-ages-appropriate action film that parents won’t feel guilty over taking their kids to.

His latest, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood , is his ninth of that proposed 10 (assuming, like Tarantino, you treat Kill Bill as a single film and try to forget Four Rooms happened).

It may be Tarantino’s most personal and intimate film to date (tying with “Jackie Brown” on the latter) as the director talks about tapping out after 10 films – which this would be if “Four Rooms” counts, but I digress.
