1994's " When a Man Loves a Woman ," a clear influence on "Addicted," showed a marriage nearly done in by alcoholism, and was a serious look at addiction, acknowledging the tough truth that not only the "sick" one needed to change.
You don't often see middle-class alcoholism on screen (I can't remember any instances since Meg Ryan in the devastating When A Man Loves A Woman ) and Blunt delivers a typically eviscerating, horrifying real experience of a life in ruins.
