The Best Offer poster
His latest, which takes place in a generic European city, looks set to introduce a collision of pathologies, or at least some overwrought dueling like his Depardieu-Polanski face-off, “A Pure Formality” (1995).

As in the director’s A Pure Formality andThe Unknown Woman, the anonymous location “somewhere in Europe” makes it easier to accept an international cast speaking English.

Malena poster
After the bravura esoterica of such films as "A Pure Formality" and "The Legend of 1900," Giuseppe Tornatore, with "Malena," returns to the wide appeal of his classic "Cinema Paradiso."
But it smacks of a desperation move for Italian director Giuseppe Tornatore, who has at least two very good movies to his credit (1994's "A Pure Formality" and 1988's Oscar-winning "Cinema Paradiso").
