While Robert Altman shot Paris as the city of dog poop for his curdled " Ready to Wear " back in the day, Allen and cinematographer Darius Khondji (" Stealing Beauty ," "Seven," " My Blueberry Nights ") give us a Paris that's not quite as shiny as that of " Amelie " but looks scrubbed pretty clean nevertheless:Â the way Paris looks sometimes when recollected by those who love it, as it happens.
The man's movies are busy - they always have been, sometimes to their detriment, as in "Ready to Wear."
As in The Player and Ready to Wear, Altman mercilessly satirizes a whole culture and way of life, along the way finding not a single nice thing to say about anyone or anything involved.
Altman carefully dodges the screwball pitfalls that have come to define his more excruciating ensemble pieces (A Wedding, Ready to Wear).
