Guarding Tess (1994)

Directed by Hugh Wilson

Doug is a Secret Service Agent who has just completed his stint in charge protecting Tess Carlisle—the widow of a former U.S. President, and a close personal friend of the current President. He finds that she has requested that he not be rotated but instead return to be her permanent detail. Doug is crushed, and—after returning—wants off her detail as she is very difficult to guard and makes her detail crazy with her whims and demands.

It opens with a clip from Con Air , contains tongue-in-cheek nods to The Croods 2 , Captain Corelli’s Mandolin and Guarding Tess , and features a scene packed with Cage-flavoured props, from Mandy ’s chainsaw to the twin gold guns from Face/Off .

They're here for its true focus: Piling in as many self-reflexive Cage nods as possible, including having the man repeat some of his most famous dialogue and startle himself while watching himself in "Guarding Tess."

You don’t have to be a Cage enthusiast on the scale of Javi to appreciate the film, with most of the wink-wink references relegated to name-drops of popular titles, or Cage resolutely affirming the underrated status of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin or Guarding Tess .
It's even more accessible than Entourage, because Unbearable Weight references mainstream movies that people have seen, such as Con Air, The Rock, National Treasure and to a lesser extent, Guarding Tess.
Blast From The Past, directed by Hugh Wilson (Police Academy, Guarding Tess), written by Bill Kelly and Hugh Wilson, and starring Brendan Fraser (George Of The Jungle) is the story of one such family, the Webbers, who actually moved into theirs — in 1962 — and did not emerge until 35 years later.

Director/co-writer Hugh Wilson ("The First Wives Club," "Guarding Tess") envisions Adam as a Forrest Gump-like sweetheart bringing naive warmth to the world, and Fraser plays him like Tom Hanks on happy pills.
Wilson, whose previous credits include Guarding Tess and The First Wives Club , dropped what looks like, from the press box, an easy pass.

"Blast From the Past'' is the first screen credit for writer Bill Kelly , who co-scripted with the director, Wilson ("The First Wives Club,'' the overlooked "Guarding Tess'').
