When Mary, a beautiful woman, loses an important suitcase with money before she leaves for Aspen, the two friends (who have found the suitcase) decide to return it to her. After some "adventures" they finally get to Aspen where, using the lost money they live it up and fight for Mary's heart.

What critics compared Dumb and Dumber to
There are several scenes where Bullock’s facial reactions reminded me of Jim Carrey in scenes from Dumb & Dumber and Liar Liar .
In the tradition of Steve Martin's The Jerk, Carrey here plays a guy who just couldn't be any more stupid and not drown in a rainstorm.
It's not long before they encounter Mud (Matthew McConaughey, sporting a large snake tattoo and a chipped front tooth a la Jim Carrey in "Dumb & Dumber"), who's not only the namesake of Jeff Nichols' brilliantly constructed, emotionally satisfying genre deconstruction, but also the film's hero and anti-hero.
The predilection for pure idiocy that runs through American culture has few finer exemplars than the Farrelly Brothers, Peter and Bobby, whose misshapen body of work includes "There's Something About Mary" and "Dumb & Dumber."
Relying on the simple slapstick that characterized a variety of two-reel shorts, lasting 15-18 minutes, dating back to 1934-1946, by the manic comedic trio known as The Three Stooges, Peter and Bobby Farrelly (“Dumb & Dumber,” “There’s Something About Mary”) have retained, revived and re-created their nostalgically amusing antics.
Though they may be best known for the R-rated "There's Something About Mary," there is a Stooge streak a mile long running through their work — the bumbling misfits with a heart of gold in their first film, "Dumb & Dumber," for starters.
My initial reaction couldn't have been far wrong, either, because I see that the writers and directors of "Dumb and Dumber," Peter and Bobby Farrelly, plan to do a film before long called, not surprisingly, "The Three Stooges."
