In the same way that it is impressive to see a well-executed wax sculpture of Jim Carrey as Ace Ventura…
The most obnoxious case of masculine swagger since Andrew Dice Clay, with just a tad of Paul Lynde thrown in for spice, Jim Carrey defies you not to bolt for the exit while playing the title hero in this 1994 comic mystery, apparently concocted with the idea of giving the world another The Adventures of Ford Fairlane.
His Dr. Robotnik is reminiscent of the over-the-top silly characters he famously created in movies like The Mask, Dumb and Dumber , and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective .
And the endlessly game Jim Carrey brings his wacky physical comedy to life here, bringing to mind his work in “The Mask,” “Liar Liar,” and “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective”–more throwbacks.
This is the Carrey you remember from Ace Ventura: Pet Detective , from Batman Forever , where wild gestures or theatrical line reads define so much of the mustachioed “Eggman’s” presence.
Could the rubber-faced fartsmith overcome the juvenile stigma of anything-for-laughs flicks like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Dumb and Dumber, or would the sight of his impish grin undermine the efforts of director Joel Schumacher (Phone Booth, Flatliners) to build the necessary tension?
Carrey plays Walter Sparrow, a happy-go-lucky animal-control warden (yes, it's impossible to get Ace Ventura: Pet Detective out of your head while watching) whose wife, Agatha ( Virginia Madsen), gives him a birthday present, a secondhand novel called The Number 23. Walter fixates on the prose, which viewers see acted out -- with Carrey in the role of a tough-guy cop whose lover is into kinky sex at crime scenes and who discovers some sort of conspiracy centered on the numeral 23. Walter is shocked at parallels between the novel and his life, including street addresses, license plates, letters in names, calendar dates, room numbers, etc., all of which add up to 23.
That might have made it a strange prequel to Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, except for director Joel Schumacher, who has a thing for splashy thrillers.
