Wayne Dobie is a shy cop whose low-key demeanor has earned him the affectionate nickname "Mad Dog." After Mad Dog saves the life of Frank Milo, a crime boss and aspiring stand-up comedian, he's offered the company of an attractive young waitress named Glory for a week. At first both are uneasy about the arrangement, but they eventually fall in love. However, the situation becomes complicated when Milo demands Glory back.

What critics compared Mad Dog and Glory to
Here is a rare eccentric among American actors, someone not just ready for but reliant on unusual adventure in a project (Groundhog Day, Mad Dog and Glory, Lost in Translation).
The Drop feels more than a little like a darker remake of Mad Dog And Glory, with the bar owner/gangster separated into two characters, the menace dialed up, and the dog turned literal.
(The Robert De Niro/Bill Murray vehicular collision Mad Dog and Glory is as misogynistic as they come, yet I find it enormously uplifting.)
McNaughton's previous films are the disturbing Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, the underrated Mad Dog and Glory, and Normal Life, a great movie that was shamefully disregarded by its own studio.
