What critics compared Alive to
Sharing far more similarities with real-life 1993 drama "Alive" than the action-centric likes of 1993's "Cliffhanger" and 2000's "Vertical Limit," director Kormákur is forthright in telling a story more about the ordeal of human endurance than calculated thrills.The ensemble is bursting with great actors, which makes their roles' shortage of complexity somewhat of a missed opportunity.
For many moviegoers, the act is so abhorrent that its depiction must be associated with a last-resort effort to survive (Alive, 1993), an uncivilized tribe (Cannibal Holocaust, 1980), families of regressed or inbred killers (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, 1974; The Hills Have Eyes, 1974), or a mythical spirit that compels the hunger (Ravenous, 1999).
In Alive, screenwriter John Patrick Shanley (Moonstruck) and director Frank Marshall (Arachnophobia) reenact the tale of this modern-day Donner party with queasy verisimilitude, right down to the moment and, yes, it is truly disgusting when the characters begin to strip off bits of raw flesh.
Inexplicably scripted by John Patrick Shanley (who wrote "Moonstruck"), nothing transcends the material.
But there's obviously a lot more to it and director Frank Marshall ("Arachnophobia"), using a script by John Patrick Shanley ("Moonstruck," "Joe Versus the Volcano"), has made a movie that tries to explore the inherent insistence of the human spirit to struggle for life against all odds.
