What critics compared Singles to
No matter what else they lack, Crowe's movies—Say Anything ..., Singles, Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous—have a core of feeling: You can discern the writer-director's struggle to spin his fear of loneliness into doleful comic gold.
You can argue that the film's spirit derives as much from the sensitivity of writer Cameron Crowe (who went on to direct Singles) or the cast of dedicated performers -- Penn, Reinhold, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Nicolas Cage, Forest Whittaker -- as anything, but I've always been rooting for the director, Amy Heckerling, to concoct a worthy followup.
There are no seeds of a better extended cut here, or at least nothing like the excellent “Untitled” version of Crowe’s Almost Famous.
A glance at Crowe's directorial canon, from Say Anything and Singles through to the overcelebrated Jerry Maguire, reveals the same frustrating pattern.
…for the thudding whimsies of Singles, then boosted his career with Jerry Maguireâs calculating charms, turns out to be more than a master of finessed intimacies, a pop-music savant with unforced show-business timing.
He became a writer/director beginning with Say Anything in 1988, following it with the "good date movie", Singles, in 1992.
And, as he demonstrated, in "Say Anything," "Singles" and "Jerry Maguire," Crowe often makes this quest with an ample supply of generous humor, a whimsical slyness, and a true compassion that never turns treacly.
