This pastoral psychedelic body-horror has a definite stylised weirdness, which is no surprise, given that it stars Nicolas Cage, was adapted from a story by HP Lovecraft and is directed by Richard Stanley, the cult creator of Hardware and Dust Devil.
Similarly, director Richard Stanley has been highly regarded among the genre community since his films Hardware and Dust Devil in the early '90s, but has avoided directing any narrative genre stories for the better part of 30 years.
The idea that Stanley has not made a complete feature film since 1992’s Dust Devil makes the curio factor of Color Out of Space expand tenfold.
After attaining a niche audience of fans with Hardware (1990) and Dust Devil (1992), Stanley booked his dream job: directing a big budget version of The Island of Dr. Moreau .
