To understand most of its references, you should know, for example, John Singleton's "Boyz N the Hood" and "Poetic Justice," the Hughes brothers' "Menace II Society," Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing" and "Jungle Fever" and at least one music video by Dr. Dre or Snoop Doggy Dogg.
His wealth established, Lucas then brings his mother (Ruby Dee, "Jungle Fever") and six brothers from North Carolina where he seems to expect they will flourish as big city drug kingpins.
A cavernous warehouse is populated by virtual reality junkies blind to the real world outside their goggles, the floor around them littered with glow sticks the way the crack house in Jungle Fever is with vials and pills.
On the one hand, the ingenuity Fincher must have gleaned from hawking products to the MTV set led him to use the most eye-catching opening credits I've seen since Spike Lee's "Jungle Fever."

High marks go also to Scott Glenn, as one of Alonzo's drug-dealing cronies, and rapper/porn-maestro Snoop Dogg, whose cameo as a wheelchair-bound 'banger rivals Samuel Jackson's riveting turn as Gator in Jungle Fever for sheer “who knew?” surprise.
Directed by Spike Lee (yeah, that’s right: Jungle Fever, 25th Hour), films with a premise like Inside Man are usually the kind of Thomas Crown Affair movie for 50-year+ old actors that seem to drag on for hours without end and without purpose.
In Lee's New York - on show in films such as Do The Right Thing and Jungle Fever - people rarely settle their differences.
I would say this may not be Lee's best film -- it's clearly a more impersonal, less passionate work than "Do the Right Thing" or "Jungle Fever" -- but it's his most complete.
