From her work with Derek Jarman (Edward II) and Sally Potter (gender-bending Orlando) in the early 1990s to last year’s career-best work in Erick Zonka’s Julia, she has proved to be an enigmatic muse for directors of the arthouse and mainstream.
Jarman, the British director who suffers from AIDS and whose past work ("Caravaggio" and "Sebastiane," among others) has dealt openly with gay themes, has found in Edward a martyred hero, a victim of repression and injustice whose obsessional passion for another man, the despised Gaveston, leads to his overthrow and savage murder.
In previous films, like Sebastiane and Caravaggio, Jarman had already begun his examination of sexual politics and gay aesthetics.
