What critics compared Mystic Pizza to
Petrie made the quirkily enjoyable Mystic Pizza more than a decade ago but has since been responsible for such lifeless and lightweight bombs as Richie Rich and My Favorite Martian.
Phoning in this Pygmalian update with by-the-numbers storytelling and uninspired direction, Donald Petrie (" Grumpy Old Men ," " Mystic Pizza ") fails to mine the comic gold here, instead opting for easy laughs and predictable motions with such an obvious target.
While there certainly are elements of many different genres and films here, from Glee to Mystic Pizza to any you-name-it teenage coming-of-age movie, CODA literally speaks in its own language and delivers an experience that is unique, heartfelt, sincere and most definitely worthwhile.
When Andie starts to really fall for Ben, director Donald Petrie ("Miss Congeniality," "Mystic Pizza") lets things go all gooey, instead of riffing on the vaguely thrilling undertones of treachery and deviousness he'd set up in the couple's early scenes together.
