A clumsy, shallow cross between 1988's "Beaches" and 2000's " Here on Earth "?both infinitely superior films?it's all so mechanically telegraphed here that there isn't an honest or touching moment to be found.
The CIA keeps giving Susan anti-glamorous disguises (“I look like somebody’s homophobic aunt,” she says of one) and such insulting toys as a Beaches watch and stool softener.
Directed by Garry Marshall, Beaches contains the some of the schmaltz Ive come to expect from his movies (see The Princess Diaries ), but its less annoying here, partly because of screenwriter Mary Alice Donoghues ( Veronica Guerin ) sensitive adaptation of Iris Rainer Darts bittersweet novel.
