Tampopo (1985)

In this humorous paean to the joys of food, a pair of truck drivers happen onto a decrepit roadside shop selling ramen noodles. The widowed owner, Tampopo, begs them to help her turn her establishment into a paragon of the "art of noodle-soup making". Interspersed are satirical vignettes about the importance of food to different aspects of human life.

Yamazaki, never to be forgotten as the John Wayne–like trucker in the 1985 Tampopo, is an actor of absolute gravity and unreal smoothness, and he gives a top movie-star's performance in this role.
Daigo, however, has become the protege of a master in his art, Ikuei Sasaki (Tsutomu Yamazaki, "Tampopo"), and soon realizes the importance of the ritual of washing and dressing a deceased body for the loved ones left behind.
After moving there with his wife, he stumbles into a career as assistant to an elderly "encoffiner" (Tsutomo Yamazaki of Tampopo), someone who engages in the elegant ritual of dressing a corpse prior to cremation.
His master is Ikuei (Tsutomu Yamazaki, familiar from the Juzo Itami comedies Tampopo and A Taxing Woman), a gruff man who works through his grief by helping others work through theirs.
