What critics compared The Jewel of the Nile to
With just one more (maybe two) punch-ups, The Lost City could have been a sweet and salty screwball adventure in the vein of its obvious inspirations: the twin 1980s hits Romancing the Stone and The Jewel of the Nile.
We’ve seen all varieties of attempts to recreate it since its blockbuster release, from Lewis Teague’s 1985 sequel The Jewel of the Nile , to Ivan Reitman's Six Days Seven Nights , to Jaume Collet-Serra’s Jungle Cruise (which, you’ll remember, just hit theaters last year).
One reason that film’s 1985 sequel The Jewel of the Nile was so disappointing was that it didn’t follow in its predecessor’s footsteps as closely as it should have.
But it’s a damn sight better than its sequel, The Jewel of the Nile!
Romancing the Stone was enjoyable, but hackneyed, and that franchise played out after the less-successful sequel, The Jewel of the Nile .
A grail scholar, Teabing--who, with his two canes and feral, mad scientist energy, reminds me a lot of the middle stage of Brundlefly--is searching for the secret of the Holy Grail, which, The Da Vinci Code implies, is just like the Jewel in The Jewel of the Nile.
“Aquaman” is so much like parts of “Thor” and “Black Panther” and “Avatar” and “The Jewel of the Nile” and so reliant upon an ancient British legend that you don’t know why the people who made this movie bothered.
Woke enough, I guess, to forgive the rest of it for being a somehow more terrible and racially-insensitive remake of The Jewel of the Nile.

Alas, then the film jumps ahead 3 years, and that’s when Romancing the Stone becomes The Jewel of the Nile.
Actually, it feels more like a cross between The Jewel of the Nile , Assassins and the National Treasure movies, with hints of Entrapment and Smokin’ Aces , as each of the three highly paid stars – Wonder Woman herself, Gal Gadot, and Canadian wise-cracker Ryan Reynolds being the other points of the film’s triple-crossing triumvirate – attempts to earn their keep.
Using Boulle's novel as his blueprint, Burton and screenwriters William Broyles, Jr. ("Cast Away," "Apollo 13") and Lawrence Konner & Mark Rosenthal ("Mercury Rising," "The Jewel of the Nile") have fashioned a picture that, not surprisingly, comes across as quite similar in basic, underlying plot, yet feels different.
