New rules enforced by the Lady Mayoress mean that sex, weight, height and intelligence need no longer be a factor for joining the Police Force. This opens the floodgates for all and sundry to enter the Police Academy, much to the chagrin of the instructors. Not everyone is there through choice, though. Social misfit Mahoney has been forced to sign up as the only alternative to a jail sentence and it doesn't take long before he falls foul of the boorish Lieutenant Harris. But before long, Mahoney realises that he is enjoying being a police cadet and decides he wants to stay... while Harris decides he wants Mahoney out!

David Ayers latest and best cop movie has some surprising parallels to Police Academy.
Anyone who automatically thinks this will be "Police Academy" set in England will be surprised by the number of levels the movie works in, not just as a straight fish-out-of-water comedy or a irreverent satire, but also a loving tribute to the genre, and that's where the true genius lies in this movie that is far more accessible than "Shaun."
If you’re one of the two or three people who still pine for another “Police Academy” movie, “Let’s Be Cops” may be your cup of tea, even though the buddies played by Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans, Jr. are just pretend fuzz and not the real thing.
Police Academy, Hot Fuzz, and, of course, Beverly Hills Cop are all prime examples of what a cop comedy can do when it's on its game.

The comedy dynamic (snob and slob) and the story beats (drug dealers, etc.) are almost as old as time itself, and play out as awkwardly and perfunctorily as they always have in movies like this; can you really tell me the actual story of Police Academy, for instance?

Blast From The Past, directed by Hugh Wilson (Police Academy, Guarding Tess), written by Bill Kelly and Hugh Wilson, and starring Brendan Fraser (George Of The Jungle) is the story of one such family, the Webbers, who actually moved into theirs in 1962 and did not emerge until 35 years later.
Even though "Blast From the Past" focuses on Adam and Eve's obstacle-ridden romance, the movie's director, Hugh Wilson ("The First Wives Club," "Police Academy"), does a good job of conveying the decay -- physical and moral -- of contemporary life.
Directed by Hugh Wilson (Police Academy), the movie takes a few small belly-flops now and then but is quite enjoyable.
