He achieved success with his own first animated film, the six-minute award-winning short, Vincent, modeled after and narrated by his childhood hero, Vincent Price.
It could be a fan's thesis-tribute, if it weren't so clearly the heartfelt follow-up to Vincent, the auteur's debut short, and his maiden journey into the transcendently freakish.
One of Burton's first short films was "Vincent," an ode to his childhood hero, Vincent Price (later a "Scissorhands" star), and he's carried such otherworldly sensibilities into each project.
As fairy tale, it rivals his Edward Scissorhands, as underworld fantasia, his Beetlejuice, and as classic studio-bound horror, his Sleepy Hollow --in many ways, in fact, Burton's return to the stop-motion of his breakthrough short Vincent (and his co-produced The Nightmare Before Christmas ) feels like a figurative homecoming to the technique that suits him best.
‘I was lucky, because the studio got the point,’ he says, adding ‘unlike ‘Vincent”a reference to Disney’s burying the marvelous short subject for years because they thought it was too scary for its intended kid audience.

Burton fans will be pleased to find included the two legendary, career-launching short films he made while on the Disney payroll: the live-action "Frankenweenie" (30:05) and the animated "Vincent" (5:55).
"The Nightmare Before Christmas" will be shown tonight at 9 and tomorrow at 1:30 P.M. as part of the New York Film Festival, along with Mr. Burton's 1982 "Vincent."
Disc Two includes Burton's short films Frankenweenie (1984) and Vincent (1982).
"Nightmare Before Christmas" is crammed with the daffy, childlike joy and witty effervescence that marked the first, and probably best, picture of Burton's career, the 1983 stop-motion short "Vincent," about a little boy who adored Vincent Price.
