A great film about relationships—such as the recent Another Year , or the considerably less recent Shoot the Moon —conveys a sense of the casual and the incidental.
Other movies -- such as Shoot the Moon -- have dealt with love gone wrong before, but Blue Valentine almost makes you feel like youre spying on the couple in question.
Television periodically confronts this kind of thing (on “Big Little Lies,” say), but if you’re wondering when it was that a movie last dealt with the subject of separation on such a big-picture scale, you might have to go back 40 years — to the era of “Kramer vs. Kramer,” “Scenes from a Marriage,” and “Shoot the Moon.”
Other American films about divorce (a mini-canon that includes Kramer vs. Kramer , Shoot the Moon and, yes, The War of the Roses ) have portrayed this phenomenon — the legal process driving and shaping the couple’s feelings rather than vice versa — but none with the force and clarity of this one.
