Fledgling comic Benjy Stone can't believe his luck when his childhood hero, the swashbuckling matinee idol Alan Swann, gets booked to appear on the variety show he writes for. But when Swann arrives, he fails to live up to his silver screen image. Instead, he's a drunken womanizer who suffers from stage fright. Benjy is assigned to look after him before the show, and it's all he can do to keep his former idol from going completely off the rails.

What critics compared My Favorite Year to
As for other cinematic touchstones, Cage states or is told more than once that he's a movie star, not an actor, echoing Peter O'Toole's swashbuckling star in "My Favorite Year," which certainly qualifies as good company even if the film doesn't scale those heights.
And yet, people still try to make them every once in a while because the idea of a pirate movie-with all of the "kissing and jumping and drinking and humping" (to steal a quote from "My Favorite Year")-is still an enormously appealing notion.
"Scent" resembles movies such as "The Last Detail" and "My Favorite Year," in which a swaggery, larger-than-life personality shows a greenhorn how to really live.
As a producer of other people's movies, Brooks has an amazing track record; his company made " The Elephant Man ," "My Favorite Year," " Frances " and "The Fly."
