R. Neville, a brash young draftsman, is hired to make a dozen landscape illustrations at the estate of Mr Herbert and his wife Virginia. Aside from monetary compensation, the arrangement includes a sexual liaison offered to Neville by Virginia while her estranged husband is away. But when the murdered body of Mr Herbert is discovered at the estate, mysterious clues found in Neville's drawings point to the identity of the killer.

The Favourite often puts you in mind of Peter Greenaway's equally irreverent and raunchy The Draughtsman's Contract.
Lanthimos’ fussily composed shots and smothering aesthetic excess sometimes bring to mind the English director Peter Greenaway, whose 1982 murder mystery, The Draughtsman’s Contract , also took place in a world of merciless aristocrats and severely trimmed hedge mazes.
Sordid sexual arrangements generally cause these catastrophes, as in The Draughtsman's Contract (April 11) and his new Pillow Book--although the latter seems the warmest and least fussy of Greenaway's films, and a rebuttal of his stated belief that it's "very arrogant to suppose you could make a film for anybody but yourself."
Greenaway is not ordinarily such a visceral director, and indeed his earlier films (" The Draughtsman's Contract ," "A Zed and Two Noughts," "The Belly of an Architect") have specialized in cerebral detachment.
