The kids invoke Deliverance by name at one point, but in its stripped down narrative thrust and its level of sustained suspense, the film it most vividly recalls is Walter Hill�s masterful bayou thriller Southern Comfort.
Garland sets an elegantly eerie mood with the astutely judged help of cinematographer Rob Hardy's striking lateral tracks and mix of greens and colors resembling rotting fruit; physically, the film Annihilation most resembles is Walter Hill's visually lustrous 1981 action drama Southern Comfort.
Over the last couple decades, Hill has produced a plethora of notable gems such as Streets of Fire , 48 Hours, The Warriors , and Southern Comfort .
Director Walter Hill cut his teeth as one of the best action directors of the late '70s and early '80s with "The Warriors," "The Long Riders" and "Southern Comfort," though he never lived up to that promise.
