What critics compared The Beyond to
The film definitely borrows liberally from haunted house lore, but the two most obvious sources are Fulci’s House By the Cemetery and The Beyond, and since those are two of my favorites, those aspects really worked for me.
There’s a touch of Lucio Fulci’s The Beyond in writer/director Brendan Muldowney’s film.
There’s a particularly nasty nod to Lucio Fulci that almost tips into gross-out sadism – even if you haven't see The Beyond (1981), you’ll know it when you see it.
Hellraiser seems inspired more by the Italian horror masters Dario Argento ( Suspiria ), Mario Bava ( Black Sunday ), and Lucio Fulci ( The Beyond ) than by any American horror films.
In effect, CEMETERY MAN is part of the tradition of Italian horror films that prize imagery over substance, rather like Argento’s Suspiria and Lucio Fulci’s The Beyond.

A review, for those that haven’t seen the film: Dalton encounters an entity in the attic of the family home and goes into a coma, but is truly trapped in a realm past life and death called The Beyond , err, The Further.
This sudden, shocked understanding that I could - and did! - adore a film for reasons that had nothing at all to do with its narrative underlies pretty much all of the feelings I have towards movies nowadays, and while I will not say that it's Luhrmann's fault that I have since moved on to things like The Fall and Italian horror, I will also say that the exact nature of my enthusiasm for Moulin Rouge! is not so very different at all from the enthusiasm I hold for The Beyond .
