Disgraced and cast out of his tribe for lusting after Lana, the mate of the tribe's head muscle man, Atouk stumbles along gathering other misfits and learning a bit about the world outside of his cave. Eventually he and friends Lar and Tala learn the secrets of fire, cooked meat, and how to defend themselves from the brutal, yet very stupid dinosaurs.

What critics compared Caveman to
The first two acts of the joke come straight from Carl Gottlieb's loonily brilliant 1981 "Caveman," which isn't necessarily a problem (humor is often about borrowing).
Black's Zed is little more than a horndog riff on Ringo Starr's turn in 1981's Caveman, while Cera barely registers throughout.
Much as you would never confuse the caveman evolution for 2001, there is no way to mistake these prehistoric “terrible lizards” for the more realistic monsters from The Lost World (1925) or King Kong (1933).
There is a long and undistinguished tradition of comic-strips and films set in prehistoric times, including Stonehenge Kit the Ancient Brit in Knockout during the 1940s, The Flintstones on TV in the 1960s, the dire 1981 Hollywood feature film Caveman starring Ringo Starr and Barbara Bach, and now the animated The Croods .
