What critics compared The Gauntlet to
Between the steely hero, the seedy sets, Stefan Czapskyâ??s gritty camerawork, Mark Mothersbaughâ??s old-school score, and the considerable body count, it feels like something that Eastwood cranked out in the â??70s, closer in spirit to The Gauntlet than something like Gloria (and pretty undeniably similar to 1994’s The Professional as well).
(So, yes, the movie is also a little bit like " The Gauntlet ," minus the bus and the nudity.
We've seen versions of this before, in movies from "The Gauntlet" to "Midnight Run," and unable to really make anything new, "The Hitman's Bodyguard" tries to make everything bigger.
It's ultimately difficult to mistake Gran Torino for anything other than a Clint Eastwood film, as the director has infused the proceedings with as exceedingly deliberate a sensibility as one might've anticipated - yet there's little doubt that Eastwood's riveting performance proves instrumental in capturing (and sustaining) the viewer's ongoing interest.
Armed with precisely the sort of laid-back pacing one has come to expect from director Clint Eastwood, The Gauntlet suffers from a pervasively muted atmosphere that effectively drains its more overtly thrilling interludes of their impact.
